Nala - the Power of the Dog's Nose and Not Only...

HSSV's Nala
Volunteering at your local shelter is giving many dogs chance to stay alive and finding forever families. Each dog is such an individual. Labeling breed is unfair. Nala is about 10-month-old mix, she came to the shelter without any training. Yesterday, after Trish King seminar I had late afternoon date with Nala. The main goal is to give her good structure, guide her to learn how to walk on the loose leash, oh boy she is a strong, young lady. The best of all she is fantastic, fast learner, she already knows sit, down, touch. She was so happy greeting me yesterday. We went for a long walk in the evening, just practicing nice relaxed stroll. We did lots of stops. Staying in the shelter might be very stressful, so taking dog for a nice, relaxed walk is like therapy, is like meditation.
HSSV's Nala the Power of the Dog's Nose
Nala loves it, especially tracking smells on the walks.  A dog's nose not only dominates her face, but her brain, as well. In fact a dog relies on there sense of smell to interpret her world. In much the same way as people depend on their sight. Although this contrasting world view may be hard to imagine, know that your dog interprets as much information as you do. However, she does much of this by smelling an object or animal, not by staring at it.
HSSV's Nala "Do You Know?..."
Looking for information about pit bulls in the shelters I found an article in Examiner.com, Please check out article Pit Bulls and euthanasia rates, posted on Examiner.com May 13th, 2011 (http://www.examiner.com/article/pit-bulls-and-euthanasia-rates)
HSSV's Nala "A long road to adoption..."
Pit Bull dogs have a long road to adoption, often thwarted by prejudices, laws and bans. Yet, would you be surprised to learn that Pits are the number one dog being bred in America? That's right - the dogs that have the hardest time finding homes are also experiencing a baby boom of overpopulation.
HSSV's Nala - the term Pit Bull encompasses mainly three breeds of dog: the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier
It is estimated that there are 3-5 million Pit Bulls in the U.S. The term 'Pit Bull' encompasses mainly three breeds of dog: the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Considered a 'bully breed' and subject to Breed Specific Legislation, they are by far the most euthanized breed.
Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes average about 33% of shelter intakes nationally, but in large cities the numbers are as high as 40%-65%. About 75% of municipal shelters euthanize Pit Bulls immediatelyupon intake, without them ever having any chance at adoption. Those that are offered for adoption are usually the first chosen for euthanasia when overcrowding forces the shelter's hand and decisions have to be made.
HSSV's Nala "Only 1 in 600 Pits finding a forever home"
Studies estimate that up to 1 million Pits are euthanized per year, or 2,800 per day. Some estimates are up to double that number. In the Los Angeles area alone, 200 per day are put to sleep. A study by the organization Animal People reports a 93% euthanasia rate for Pit Bulls and only 1 in 600 Pits finding a forever home.
Read that again. Only ONE in 600 Pit Bulls will have a forever home.
Further, euthanasia estimates don't include the misery and death Pit Bulls face as the #1 dog-fighting breed. Fought dogs that don't die in the ring often suffer excruciating abuse, neglect, abandonment, and eventually death even worse than humane euthanasia.
Our animal shelters are not to blame.
The staff who have to 'choose' which dogs to put down are not to blame.
Those who carry out the euthanization are not to blame.
It's simple math....there are too many Pits and not enough people willing to adopt them. Shelters are overwhelmed with dogs who demand space and funds for their care and medical treatment and something's got to give. It's the animals, very often Pit Bulls, and what they give is their very lives.
Until we can educate the public and move them to spay and neuter, we're just putting a band-aid on a gushing wound. One female dog can produce two litters of 6-10 pups per year. In 6 years that female and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs!
Often, it is the cost of sterilization that keeps Pits intact to reproduce. Great work is being done to curb the Pit Bull overpopulation by organizations such as the San Francisco SPCA. The facility offered one month during which all Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes were sterilized free of charge. It went so well that they have extended the program indefinitely!
"We know first-hand through previous initiatives...the positive effect efforts like this can have in the community, " says Jeannette Goh, D.V.M., Director of the SF SPCA Spay and Neuter Clinic. "We're excited to offer this service free of charge from here on out."
San Francisco has a legal requirement that all Pits and Pit mixes be spayed or neutered because over 60% of the dogs euthanized in the city are Pit Bulls. The SF SPCA Spay/Neuter Clinic is part of the Leanne B. Roberts Animal Care Center and is on track to perform more than 9,000 sterilizations this year. During the first month of free sterilization for Pit Bulls at the facility, spay and neuter surgeries on Pit Bulls rose 350% from the previous month.
Sterilization of dogs also may increase their lifespan by 1-3 years, as it greatly reduces the risk of cancer and also curbs their urge to roam. Roaming can lead to a short, harsh life on the streets, or...you guessed it...landing in an animal shelter and facing euthanasia.
Kudos to every shelter facility that offers low cost or free sterilization of all dogs, but especially of Pit Bulls. Google to find one in your area and get it done!

Bosco "Have you found Bosco yet?

Bosco means "forest" in Italian.

Me: "Have you found Bosco yet?
You: I didn't know I supposed to be looking for him?

You don't know yet that you are looking for a little company that will bright your day, and keep your day busy and motivated. Incredibly smart Bosco loves to learn. He already knows sit, down, watch me, find it. Are you looking for running buddy? Bosco will fill out this position without blink in his eye.

HSSV's Bosco
Bosco is Manchester Terrier mix. The Manchester Terrier is lively, sharp witted breed that is eager to learn. The breed is extremely loyal to its owners and forms a strong bond early on. Since it is a terrier breed, the Manchester has a tendency to test boundaries, making consistency important in any form of training. This is not a "barky" or neurotic breed, but they are good watchdogs.

Bruce Almighty "Velcro Dog"

HSSV's Bruce

Dogs are great, my big come back to volunteering at HSSV crossed with meeting Bruce. I met him twice already. He is such a sweet, quiet, and calm soul. He loves human presence, once he will bond with his human he might be a velcro dog, attaches so firmly and to be in close physical contact with his chosen person. He followed me everywhere already, lucky his new owner to share life with.

HSSV's Bruce as a Velcro Dog
Volunteering at the local shelter is bringing to my life sweetness and awesomeness of sharing moments with dogs. Adopting dog from your local shelter will safe dog life, and will bring into your life all the best.

Scribbles and Giggles

HSSV's Scribbles "My real name is Scribbles"

My real name is Scribbles.

How Scribbles ended at the shelter I don't know or just don't care. I just treat her like my new bubble friend.

Life at the shelter is full of surprises everyday. Everyday dogs can meet new person, dog volunteer, potential daddy or mommy.

Scribbles is six-year-old Beagle-Bull. She knows how to find things on command, sit, down. Would love to come when you call her name.  She would love to work for tiny pieces of yummy treats, chicken, jerky, cookie.

Sunday noon I dressed up in HSSV's volunteer shirt, slipped into my Converse shoes, grabbed bag full of yummies, jumped into my car and drove to my volunteering destination.

Dogs value the companionship of the others in their "pack" and are sometimes distressed if they are separated from it. Typical reactions when a dog is separated from the pack are barking, howling, digging, and chewing. These activities may distress humans when they need to leave dogs alone for a period of time. However, this behavior, called separation anxiety, can be overcome with training, or at least decreased to the point where it becomes manageable.
HSSV's Scribbles "Taste"
I met Scribbles for the first time, so protocol is the same first we go for a relaxing walk, we just sniff watch, smell, lick, taste, and touch.
HSSV's Scribbles "Lick"
Second we do some training like sit, find it, watch me, come...
HSSV's Scribbles "Treat for sit"
We sniff a bunch, because it changes dogs brain, and makes a dog soooo tired and relaxed
HSSV's Scribbles "Smell"
We listen, and it is amazing how sensitive could be a dog to sounds system offered by nature.
HSSV's Scribbles "Listen"
Scribbles energy it makes me giggles.

Kovu - The Bubble Sweetheart

Thursday evening is a great time to stop by at the Bubble and visit some dogs before they will go for a good night sleep.

Kovu is a wonderful Bubble dog that everybody in the Bubble love. His window is full of pictures, and love cards. He is a very special dog and needs somebody who will be a very special person to him.

In his adoption plan stands, that he is in the Bubble since June 14th. I think it is long enough, and it is time for Kovu to move on.

HSSV's Kovu - Bubble Sweetheart
He was little bit nervous meeting me, what he does with new people. It is maybe a reason, he is still in the Bubble. Kovu needs to find a home with people who will understand his needs, and space he need.

The best way to start working on relationship is taking a Bubble dog for a nice, long, relaxing evening walk.

We walk, and stop, and sit, and sniff, and walk, and stop, and sit, and walk, and sniff...

After almost four months of break I am back to my Dogs In the Bubble. Let's meet Abby.

Chunky Monkey Puzzled "Why Am I Still at HSSV?"

HSSV's Chunky Monkey Puzzled "Why Am I Still at HSSV?"

Such a love bug!

Oh I love Monkey --- he is so affectionate and loves to cuddle and lather you with kisses. Walking/running is not his thing but he'll do it for belly rubs and massages. He loves massages and will climb on your lap for a full body massage. Puzzling he is still at HSSV.

yeah, he's a great dog

And it is completely shocking to me that he's still with us. I finally got my chance to play with him the last two weekends and he's absolutely an awesome guy. Super affectionate, really, really easy to walk, love the way he leans in his whole body for a petting, like being close isn't enough and he wants to merge. And those beautiful yellow eyes. So wise. Great little guy.
Great picture, too. It's so him.
